You didn’t fail.

You didn’t lose your progress.

And nothing is wrong with you.

So why does it feel like you keep going back?

In this episode, we explore one of the most misunderstood parts of personal growth:

Why change doesn’t always stick — even when it feels real in the moment.

You see the pattern.
You understand it.
You even shift for a moment…

and then something pulls you back.

Not because you’re weak.

Not because you lack discipline.

But because your system is still calibrated to what’s familiar.

This conversation dives into the deeper layers of:

  • nervous system conditioning
  • emotional patterning
  • identity reinforcement
  • and why your body resists unfamiliar states

You’ll begin to understand why going back is part of the process — not a failure of it.

And how real change happens when your body, not just your mind, catches up.

Have you ever felt like you finally saw the pattern? You understood it? Maybe you even stepped out of it for a moment. And then you went right back. And the worst part isn't even going back. It's the voice that comes after. See, nothing changed. I knew this wouldn't last. What's wrong with me? So let me say this clearly, because babe, you didn't fail. You didn't lose your progress, and nothing is wrong with you. You went back because your system is still calibrated to what's familiar. So welcome back to the Spiritually Kinky podcast. I'm your host, Dustin Wheeler, where we talk about manifestation, nervous system regulation, identity, and conscious creation in a way that actually explains why change feels so hard to sustain. So in part one, we talked about how you're not stuck, babe. You're looping. In part two, we talked about how to step out of the loop. And today we're talking about the part that most people don't understand. Why you go back. And this is what it looks like. You have a breakthrough, you feel clear, light, different, expansive. You think, okay, this is it. Oh, I finally shifted. This feels real. You show up differently, you take action, you feel more like yourself, and then a few days later, maybe a week, maybe a month, something subtle happens. You hesitate, you overthink, you feel a familiar tension in your body. And before you can realize it, you've pulled back. You're thinking the same thoughts again, feeling the same emotions again, acting in the same ways again. It doesn't feel like you chose to go back, it feels like you got pulled because that's what actually happened. But here comes the shame. This always happens. I can't stay consistent. I must not be ready. Maybe I'm just not capable. And now you're not just in the loop, you're in the loop about the loop. You don't just return to the pattern, you reinforce it with shame. So let's talk about what actually happens here because this is where everything shifts. Your brain may have a new awareness. Your mind may want something different, but your body, your nervous system, your cells are still calibrated to the old emotional baseline. Stress, pressure, uncertainty, overthinking. Your mind moved forward, but your body is still living in the past. And remember, your cells don't just process emotions. They get used to them, they adapt to them, they start expecting them. Which means when you step into something new, something calmer, something more certain, something more aligned, your system doesn't always register that as better. It registers it as unfamiliar. And unfamiliar does not feel safe. Unfamiliar feels like a threat. So what happens? Your system pulls you back, not to hurt you, not to be against you, but to stabilize you. And you didn't go backwards, your system tried to return to what it knows. And this is why change doesn't stick right away. Not because it's not real, but because it's not yet normalized. And underneath that is identity. Because if your identity is still organized around, I'm the one who struggles, I'm the one who almost gets there, I'm the one who has to work harder than everyone else, then when you step into something new, there's a quiet pull to return to who you've been practiced at being. You don't fall back into old patterns, you fall back into familiar identities. So let's clean this up. You didn't fail, you didn't lose progress, you didn't mess it up. You experienced a moment where your system met something new and didn't know fully how to hold it yet. That's it. So what actually creates change? Well, this is why we don't focus on getting it right once. We focus on repetition of a new experience. We focus on follow-through. Inside the spiritually kinky community and academy, this is where the neuroemotional work comes in. We don't just create a mental shift, we create an emotional experience that your body can begin to recognize as safe. So instead of your cells being addicted to stress, they start getting used to peace, certainty, clarity, desire, purpose, pleasure, play. And over time, what once felt unfamiliar becomes natural. Change doesn't stick, babe, when it's understood. It sticks when it's embodied. So instead of asking, why did I go back? Ask what part of me hasn't caught up yet. Instead of judging the moment, you get curious about it. And now you're no longer fighting yourself. You're working with your system. So let me leave you with this. Going back doesn't mean you're broken. It means you're in the process of remembering who you really are and stepping into a new identity. And that process includes moments where your old system tries to pull you back in to what's familiar. But what's familiar, babe, doesn't have to be where you stay. So if you're ready to actually stabilize the new, to train your system to live in something different, then come join us inside the community because this is the kind of work that we do there. Because, babe, you are not broken. You are the creative force within, and you get to choose what you would love to create. And whether you're here to be a little bit spiritual, or you're here to be a little bit kinky, or you're here like me to be a whole lot of both, because creation is one of the fucking kinkiest things that you will ever do, lead with love, my friends. And in case nobody told you today, I see you, I feel you, and I love you, and you are not alone.
